Sunrise Imports is a family run business that specializes in selling unique
handcrafted gifts from Mexico, Central America and the United States. Because our
founder, Sheila Summers, is an educator, a lover of travel and art, and a life-long
student, she created Sunrise Imports to help further her desire to embrace cultural
diversity and bridge cultural differences. With many travel experiences in Mexico and
Central America under her belt, the development of a business that marries Latin
culture and the arts seemed a perfect fit.
In addition, as a business owner and the mother of a young child, time is always in
short supply, yet birthdays, holidays and numerous other gift giving events abound. So
we designed our website with those two thoughts in mind: simplicity for the
time-constrained gift buyer, and an opportunity to learn, as we provide links to a wealth
of information. These links offer our customers a chance to learn more about the
artists and artisans, our non-profit partners with whom we share a portion of our profits,
as well as information on the rich history of artistic and cultural tradition in various parts
of Central America. Many of the products we carry come from low-income indigenous
artisans in under developed regions of Central America. The artisans are paid living
wages and often work within a cooperative to help sustain their entire community. Most
of our purchases are made directly from the producers. In a few cases, we work with
reputable fair trade wholesalers so that we are certain the artisans are treated fairly and
receive proper payment for their goods.
We also carry handmade greeting cards, natural bath and body products, scented
candles, and decorative items which are created by local artists and small
organizations in the United States. We pride ourselves on purchasing only from
persons who do business ethically and respect all people and the environment in the
making of their products.
A few items in our stock, while unique, are not handcrafted, but do compliment our
product line very nicely. Our music cds from Putumayo World Music introduce our
customers to the fun, upbeat rhythms of latin music. Our bilingual children's literature
from Cinco Puntos Press offers readers a chance to experience diverse folktales in a
new way, as written by award winning regional authors. These books are popular with
teachers and free teacher resources are available for some titles.
